  1. I saw an old tenement building where a family of 10 all slept in lived in the same room and it made me think, were the parents riding in full view of the children?

  2. funnily enough this is an image of a mexican immigrants family in south texas rio grande region. to be fair back then there was no tv, no internet and not much to really do except ride.

  3. How many survived all the way into adult hood though? There was a large family near me growing up and I remember my grandmother making a joke about the woman not being able count properly, I always thought it referred to the number of kids. But when I got I wondered if the joke just went over my head.

  4. I think a lot of those women would have preferred to have fewer kids. Not that they didn’t love their children, but they didn’t really have a choice. I know this is true for my Gran.

  5. All people think about these days is sex, back in her day they were too busy having sex to be thinking about it.

Makes sense really that if you’re not getting any, you think about it more

  6. My understanding was granny and granddad were worried who was going to look after them when they got old, and childhood mortality was pretty high back then.

Don’t think it’s even a catholic thing tbf, me da’s a Dutch Protestant (Lutheran to be precise which is basically prod on steds) his mam’s one of 9 and he has 40 odd cousins, remember having a drink in a bar in his home town and he spots someone and says to me “oh that’s me cousin over there” I ask “do you not want to go over and say hello?” His response “why would I do that? I don’t even know the cunt” the 50’s were a fucking weird time
