  1. I think shes too condescending. I don’t see the irish electorate liking her. Her only chance is other parties pick worse candidates….which is eminently possible

  2. Honestly, it’s not a bad pick. She’s uncontroversial, boring and distinctly middle of the pack.

If it’s all loons she does well, if it’s a decent field and she performs middling, she doesn’t embarrass FG.

Edit: this is my take from a purely political lens on how FG would look at it. From a personal perspective, I’ll likely only vote her in as a tactical vote to keep others out if there’s no outstanding candidate in the field.

  3. She screams Hilary Clinton 2016 – objectively qualified but severely lacking charisma. It’s a trait shared by many fg presidential candidates in the past. It’s not a coincidence they’ve never held the Áras, I can’t see that changing with McGuinness.

  4. I presume McGregor is out of the race at this stage,

You know, due to having exposed his actual penis to the public in the past few days?

Any previous presidential candidates had their genitalia publicly exposed just before kickoff?

  5. A strong candidate, I’d imagine a lot of potential opponents will opt out now.

  6. Can somebody explain the general negativity here? She seems very middle of the road

  7. She doesn’t excite me, but at the very least she’d be a safe pair of hands. She’s also got a wreath if experience politicking at a high level and is incredible well respected within the EU circles.

In place of some of the other names being bandied around I think she could do well as the least worst, uncontroversial candidate, appealing to a generally disinterested electorate.

  8. She’s way too religious and sympathetic to right wing Catholic shite

  9. She’ll have my vote. Very keen to keep the extreme foreign policy views of Catherine Connolly etc away from the office of President.

  10. Not a fan of the far-left, but Joe Higgins was a legend for telling the President of the day to her face that he thought the presidency was superfluous.

    Wikipedia:

“When President Mary McAleese telephoned Higgins in 2004 to inform him of her decision to seek re-election, he told her that her office was ‘superfluous and should be abolished’. McAleese was reported to have been left speechless”.

  11. > In 2019, McGuinness authored a report that proposed more direct meetings between religious associations and the European Parliament’s rapporteurs. The proposal was shelved after a group of MEPs complained that it would create “a highly undesirable and untransparent privileged lobby channel for religious organisations”.

    Hmm

  12. A professional Eurocrat who defended Ursula von der Leyen.

  13. You tell thos sub is aging when they find McGuinness the acceptable candidate 🤣

  14. I don’t love her, but she’s better than Connolly. Hoping for a candidate I can truly support to enter the race

  15. Oh, you mean the wagon who voted against giving aid to drowning migrants in the Mediterranean?

    Yeah, you’re ok thanks

  16. The eurocrat has returned to make sure we are doing our homework

  17. Lots of comments on the electorate not liking her voting to let people drown. She has also defended Von Der Leyen and has a long record of towing the EPP line in Gaza. That is to say pro-isreal, not bothered by genocide as long as it’s against palestinians. FG have changed their tune lately(as they do when the wind changes) but if those votes are highlighted at all in the debates I think public perception will sour quickly. Her coziness with RTE may be her saving grace there though, they’ll give her an easy ride.
