  16. Indonesia just entered a free trade agreement with the EU and has joined BRICS, probably used as a leverage to lower the tariff by almost half. Aside from produce, especially beef that is consumed by the middle-upper class, American end products are way too expensive for most of us even without tariff.

Any import tariffs Indonesia levies are modest and are a tax on the Indonesian rich because it’s the upper clesses who buy imports and it’s the upper class who manage to avoid other tax they are supposed to pay. So tariffs on a Yank pick-up truck imported for pleasure are a proxy for an income tax. Second, with everyone in SEA settling for about 20% there is no internal competition to cut prices and eat some of the tariff so the full tariff costs get paid on the Yank side.

His jobs market sucks with NFP’s limping along always under 150K, debt is getting more expensive, the dollar is getting weaker, his enemies like China are actually doing pretty well, his inflation is heading in the wrong direction and his stocks are growing well below trend. Even the Brexit he was such a big fan of is backsliding closer to the EU.

The most recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) just came in and went up by 2.7% over last month, ahead of the 2.6% expectation. Inflation lags behind the imposition of tariffs, so the CPI of the next 2-3mo are going to be even higher. Trump really believes he can tax the American people to prosperity. All he’s doing is hurting the nation with these broad, punitive tariffs. They’re not even based on a particular economic strategy. They’re literally just numbers that Trump is pulling out of his ass based on how he feels.
