IIRC both france and italy have strongly opposed any support for Ukraine that doesn’t profit their own countries. They don’t support the European initiatives to provide Ukraine with munitions no matter the source. Their support for Ukraine is conditional to France and Italy making money.
The French prime minister announced yesterday that France needs to cut their spending by 43 billion Euros in the next 4 years. Considering the fragile political situation created by Macron last year with his decision to dissolve the parlement, and the elections resulting in no clear majority, spending French tax payer money on US equipment (thus not flowing back into the French economy), would be hugely unpopular at the moment.
So Macrons support for Ukraine was always a facade?
Maybe he thinks talking to Putin on the phone again will be more beneficial.
*sighs deeply in German*
Makes sense. France is trying to keep EU money in the EU to build up a military industry. That kind of deal defeats the purpose of all these last months.
I guess fighting the ruZZians on your own soil is more fiscally responsible, somehow. 🤦🏻♂️
Buying US equipment from the least trustworthy US administration would be political suicide.
Excellent choice Macron and Meloni.
Build and buy European, British, Canadian, Australasian, Asian, or African before American.
The EU doesn’t need the US or NATO. They have the talent, technology and industry to go it alone and with someone like Trump in charge, they absolutely should. Spend the money on EU weapons and further build up their military capabilities
Sounds like it’s not a thing against Ukraine, but rather not wanting to pay the USA perhaps ?
Instead invest that money into their own arms production systems..
So other NATO countries pay for the weapons Ukraine so urgently needs now, while France and Italy can use the time and money said purchases buy them to prop up their own military industrial complex – which in turn puts them in a better position to, in the future, sell weapons to the same NATO allies that now foot the bill.
Is that about right? Cool, cool.
No idea about Italy but I think France is doing a lot of other stuff, I can see them maybe not wanting to give into Trump’s bullshit. And they do need to spend on their own industry because if Trump decides F-16 parts can’t be supplied to Ukraine anymore, all they’ll have left is those French jets. They’re the only backup plan.
