HMRC does not know how many billionaires pay tax in UK

  1. According to the 2024 Forbes list there are only 20, how hard can it be to track 20 people.
Yet HMRC finds the time to examine Ebay accounts

  2. It’s a really misleading line of argument.

The UK doesn’t have a wealth tax, so *there’s no need for HMRC to count billionaires.* The UK does have taxes on capital gains, on selling mansions, on business profits &c so they’ve got enormous amounts of data on those things; if your company makes a £1Bn profit, HMRC will know about it. Sell a £50m house and you can be 100% sure that HMRC have got their beady eye on stamp duty.

There are definitely billionaires paying tax, and HMRC knows how much tax it collects from any given person.

Some campaigners would be shocked to learn that GDPR rights extend even to people that you don’t like. So if HMRC compiled a list of people’s wealth, even though HMRC doesn’t actually need it for taxation, that might hit some legal hurdles…?

  3. I would rather the rich keep it than it going in to the hands of the hoards of benefit frauds to be honest

  4. HMRC deal with income whereas billionaire is a term if wealth isn’t it? How would they know?

On a smaller scale, they don’t know if I’m a millionaire or living month to month either

  5. It’s about time the government starts listening to Gary Stevenson

  6. Thread is already filling up with the Billionaire-fellators.

They’re not going to fuck you, folks, you’re still as dirt poor as the rest of us.

  7. Maybe it’s because they have the resources to game the system and influence politicians.

Zero need to have billions in this life.

  8. Yet folk will say it’s the boats that’s the problem. It’s the rich, take their wealth and assets away and redistribution for the benefit of us all.
