IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) – Soon, the streets around Iron Mountain and Kingsford will be filled with lemonade stands.
Saturday is Lemonade Day, a designated time for kids to dip their toes into the business world.
Iron Mountain-Kingsford Credit Union is a returning sponsor for Lemonade Day.
Marketing Director Amanda Bartels says the credit union supports educating young kids in financial literacy.
“Well, we want them to see the value of a dollar,” Bartels said. “We live in a world where it’s a circle of money. We go to work, we spend the money, we give the money. You know, it’s just the circle of life.”
And for one pair of siblings, that education came fast.
Kaylee and Weston ran a lemonade stand for the last three years.
They say learning the cost of maintaining a business was shocking.
“Putting into the lemonade stand also was hard because we had to get the paint, we had to get the materials for it,” the pair said. “Buying the stuff for the lemonade stand, like the lemonade and stuff, was expensive.”
Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Suzanne Larson says kids learn soft skills running their stand.
“They are learning how to talk to people,” Larson said. “When you walk up to a stand and you say, I’d like to buy a lemonade, they are right up there. How can I help you? Can I get you a bracelet? Would you like to buy a bracelet? They are upselling. They are learning all these great skills that they just wouldn’t get otherwise.”
You can still register your child for Lemonade Day by contacting the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce.
A map of Lemonade Day stands can be found on the Chamber’s website.
