Iasi Municipality will benefit from a historic investment in district heating infrastructure, attracting total funding of nearly RON 450 million, as part of the largest project of its kind ever undertaken by the local administration.

Deputy Mayor Daniel Juravle announced the conclusion of two major funding agreements, approved by the Minister of Development, Public Works and Administration, Cseke Attila, which will radically transform the heating system in Iasi, both in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability.

The first project, worth RON 192.7 million, involves the installation of new equipment for the production of thermal energy in cogeneration at CET I Iasi. They will enable more efficient and greener energy generation, with a direct impact on costs and the quality of services provided to the population.

The second agreement, worth RON 249.2 million, provides for the conversion of CET II Holboca from coal-fired to natural gas, in a significant step towards reducing emissions and adapting the system to new environmental requirements.

Daniel Juravle emphasized that the whole process – from submitting the project in March 2025, to winning the funding in May and signing the contracts in July – was carried out in record time, as a result of a sustained effort by the City Hall team.

“Investments will be made in modern, efficient and flexible equipment ready for the energy transition – including the use of hydrogen. We ensure energy security and thermal comfort for tens of thousands of apartments, schools, hospitals and companies,” Deputy Mayor Juravle said.

Both the technical design and the execution of the works will be completed within 18 months, which means that from 2028, more than 80% of the thermal energy produced in the municipality will come from cogeneration with renewable sources, in line with European requirements for the green transition.

The new network will:

Reduce the costs of producing and distributing thermal energy. Increase system reliability and reduce losses Reduce pollution by replacing polluting fossil fuels. Prepare the city for the energy transition, including the integration of hydrogen technologies.

Iasi thus becomes a national model of efficiency and vision in the field of district heating, by attracting the largest direct funds managed by a Romanian municipality for the modernization of energy infrastructure. A decisive step towards a greener, cleaner and more future-proof city.
