I think you misunderstand who this would benefit. A large population of the youth are now well into the alt-right-grifter-alpha-male-sphere. Brainrot always existed, it just used to be called propaganda
*Edit: I agree they should be able to vote, never said otherwise. I voted under 18 in the Scottish indy ref and remember that being a huge deal at the time. This comment was in response to OPs prediction on the fall of aging unionists.*
16/17 YOs that’ll actually vote are a small proportion of 16/17 YOs who are a very small proportion of all voters.
With the way some people are reacting you’d have thought that small proportion was about to directly install a government tomorrow and start throwing anyone north of 24 into the sea.
Think this means any future referendums (EU and Indy) will be from 16 as well.
I think it’s fair. If you are expected to pay taxes at 16 if you work, then you should have a say in the running of the country.
Yes, there are many daft and silly kids, but, as we see all too frequently, there are many daft, silly and idiotic adults and no one questions if they should vote or not.
>”I think it’s really important that 16 and 17-year-olds have the vote, because they are old enough to go out to work, they are old enough to pay taxes, so pay in,” he tells ITV News.
> In other changes, people will also be able to use bank cards as voter ID, the government says
That’s a very good idea, second only to just scrapping the ID nonsense.
Thoughts:
Last election, Labour’s voters were substantially younger than reform or conservative voters. So this might be significant.
But:
Younger voters are a bit more exposed to the right wing nonsense on social media, being generally heavier users of smartphones.
Too bad they’re not going to bother actually voting
But can’t buy a lottery ticket 🙄
Let’s hope they receive proper political education ahead of voting
I really don’t understand why any new political development, even a universally positive one like this, has to be tinged with posters pushing anti-unionist sentiment and myths of “aging unionists” getting “telt”.
YouGov polling from last year had 18-24 year olds at 39% Yes voters compared to 42% for 25-49 year olds.
And, as always, there are legitimate reasons to not vote in favour of independence or believing that independence isn’t the right thing at the moment.
This myth of Scotland being held back by old farts voting no because they just love the union is extremely reductive, tribalist and ignores unanswered economic questions in a style reminiscent of Brexiteers.
A couple of years back the kids had to do an essay on an independent Scotland or not. All i heard was talk about our glorious union from one set and F the Queen from the other set. These kids vote on which team they support. It has nothing to do with what’s best for the country. Obviously not all of them but a fair share would vote for exactly the wrong reasons.
Voting rights shouldn’t be awarded according to age.
There should be an aptitude test before they’re awarded.
Getting 16 and 17 year old to vote is a terrible idea as they dont have any understanding of politics (go have a chat with one) they usually sound like your average redditor.
But saying that thats what the snp and others want, people who are nieve enough to vote for them and have little memory of what they haven’t achieved.
So makes sense, its also more likely to bring about Scotland separation since kids learn on tic tok and here which is hugely left, anti union etc.
So a win for self destruction I mean self determination!
This is probably mostly a non-issue since half of the youngest group of voters doesn’t vote anyway.
When I was 16 I was a sheltered idiot with strict parents, who knew nothing about the world outside school and what I could learn from the many novels I read and films I watched. I would actively have voted for whomever I thought would make bad things happen, as a way to spice up my very boring life. War, famine, revolution? The perfect setup for a real-life adventure like the ones I’d read about! I went away to uni at 18 and very quickly learned to be less stupid!
lol remember the rage in Scotland when this was introduced and then when the majority of 16 year olds voted No they were fine with it.
Waiting for Kier to hop on stage, fortnite dance and appeal to all of his sigma coded skibidi rizzlers out there.
