Bakar was the stage for a fascinating display of history and tradition over the weekend as thousands gathered to witness the spectacular reenactment of the town’s famous naval battle.
Held to mark the Day of the City and the feast of Saint Margaret, Bakar’s patron saint, the event brought to life the heroic events of 1616 when the people of Bakar defended their town against Venetian galleys.
The highlight of the evening was the dramatic recreation of the sea battle, watched by more than 10,000 spectators. With cannon fire, fiery effects, explosions and a grand fireworks display lighting up the skies over Bakar Bay, the atmosphere was electric.

Carefully choreographed and supported by traditional ships, pyrotechnics and a powerful musical score, the performance was not only a feast for the senses but also a reminder of the town’s historic struggle for freedom and identity.

Adding to the authenticity were historical military units from across Croatia, whose presence brought an extra layer of realism and pride to the event.
Particularly noteworthy was the debut appearance of the Križevci Girls’ Guard, the only female historical unit in the world.

Dating back to 1848, when young women from Križevci protected Ban Josip Jelačić, their dignified presence and powerful symbolism were met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Other historical units representing Croatia’s military and naval heritage also took part, creating a powerful display of unity and national pride. This blend of tradition, community spirit and heritage is what makes Bakar’s Naval Battle one of the most unique events on the Adriatic.

“I am truly happy that Bakar continues to attract more visitors every year, and that the Naval Battle has become a key reason for people to come to our town and bay,” said Sonja Jelušić Marić, Director of the Bakar Tourist Board. “Our residents proudly take on the roles of captains, guards and nobles, helping to create an unforgettable experience.”

Throughout the day, the town’s streets and squares buzzed with energy, but all eyes were on the bay by evening, where the spectacle transformed into a highlight of the summer.
Following the battle, crowds gathered at Žal ribara to enjoy a performance by Tonči Huljić & Madre Badessa, with the night concluding with a concert by Infinity.
The celebration continued the following day with a performance by the popular klapa group Iskon. Both concerts were free, keeping with the tradition of open community celebration.
