Five thousand Polish soldiers deployed to the borders with Germany and Lithuania. According to the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, the troops have supported the operational activities of the Border Guard.
The Polish Armed Forces are assisting the Border Guard not only at the border with Belarus but now also at the borders with Germany and Lithuania. Border controls were temporarily reinstated starting Monday, July 7, for a minimum of 30 days. The government made the decision on Tuesday, July 1.
According to the General Staff’s statement, most of the five thousand soldiers came from the Territorial Defense Forces and the Military Police. Their responsibilities will include command support, logistics, training, and operational security. The Border Guard will also be supported by the Air Force, which will provide reconnaissance and surveillance using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Poland’s borders with Germany and Lithuania have now become additional key locations where soldiers will support the Border Guard. Currently, around six thousand troops mainly from the Land Forces are stationed at the Belarusian border.
The decision to deploy troops to the borders with Germany and Lithuania sends a strong message both domestically and internationally. While the move may enhance national security, its effectiveness will also depend on appropriate political communication and close cooperation with EU partners. It is essential to avoid unnecessary diplomatic tensions and minimize disruptions for citizens and border communities. In the long term, balancing national security interests with European Union principles such as the free movement of people remains essential.
By taking this step, the Polish government clearly demonstrates that its top priority is the safety of its citizens and the protection of its borders in the face of increasing pressure from illegal migration. Modern migration patterns increasingly exhibit characteristics of hybrid operations organized, orchestrated, and used as tools of destabilization. Poland is responding to these threats by treating the protection of territorial integrity and public order as fundamental to state stability. Ensuring both physical and societal security remains a supreme value guiding the country’s preventive and defensive measures.
