It is an excellent long term plan but not a good short term one.
Why not both?
Who is stopping them?
As an American I say yes – this is a prudent and wise move.
Until MAGA/Trump/Vance/Project-25 is wiped out at least
Yes 🙌
I mean… it’s sad, but I would NOT trust American hardware these days.
The chances that it could be compromised are just too high.
Why not both?
Both! Both! Both!
It’s all good, but Europe can’t produce PAC3s and there’s nothing to replace HIMARS (even though France presented an alternative, it’s not a mission-ready system). This would literally cost Ukrainian lives, civilian included. The list goes on, including comms systems like Starlink.
Why not both? There are clear gaps that Europe can’t cover, while there’s relative parity in some areas (AASM vs SDB), but there are areas where Europe has an advantage (Gepard, Skynex, etc).
The problem here is that instead of moving to a productive discussion, it becomes another politicized topic of discussion.
By “European” they meant “French”?
Just buy the best one for now, it’s what Ukraine needs that counts ! 🧐
Ukraine needs weapons right away! I don’t believe any European country is manufacturing defence weapons such as the Patriot system, but are themselves using it. Also for other weapons, sure, use European weapons, but can Europe manufacture them at the rate that Ukraine needs them? Remember the million 155 mm shells the EU promised? They said a million by the end of March 2024, and only delivered 300,000?
One other point, arms dealers should not take credit for selling their weapons! Those that purchase the weapons deserve the credit!
USA is an unreliable partner and tRump’s whole approach to NATO is an extortion to force other countries to buy US gear.
💪🏼
It’s the only sensible course – for US arms we’re at the whims of a president who very definitely doesn’t have Europe’s best interests at heart (if not actively negative). If we’re going to spend money arming Ukraine we should be buying and donating kit that generates jobs in Europe.
If we could just place an order with Raytheon or Lockheed or whoever directly for immediate shipment without Trump et al signing it off, I’d have no problem with us buying stuff that is more compatible or more effective if we don’t have an equivalent. However given Trump can change his mind next week and block or slow down deliveries it’s just not worth it. He’s unreliable *at best* or an impediment in most cases.
Build our capability while supporting UA, then we won’t get the rug pulled out from under us in a couple of months when Putin tells his agent to change his approach
Ukraine needs weapons *right now*, not in five or ten years when European stocks are finally up to good numbers.
Europe had *11 whole years* after Crimea to build up its defense industry but they chose to dick around and mostly rely on Uncle Sam instead. I hope they remember this and make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Damn right!
