That art style looks familiar. Was it used in those Alfie books? The kid with the pet rock.
IT’S A GOOD BOOK OKAY HE LOVES HIS LIL DOGGER SO MUCH
I will FIGHT you
It’s a classic. C’mon.
My favorite book next to the velveteen rabbit ❤
We had this at our school when we were kids and we thought it was extremely funny because “dogger” meant dog poo to us
I loved this book as a littlun, I named my favourite dog airport plushy after it
first released in 1977
I love Dogger.
Classic
Beats the reading book I was going to give a child in my Yr1 class. It was all about this girl who had cancer and she had to shave her head. I am not about shielding children from the harsh realities of life but this seemed a bit much
the follow ups fisher and german bight are the best
My daughter loved that book when she was at primary school. She got all of Shirley Hughes’s books because of Dogger
Did you not read as a child? Sorry, stupid question…
I challenge you to read it without blubbing.
And Percy the Park Keeper! My boy!
… Fisher, German Bight.
It’s such a sweet book. I’m 43 and it still makes my heart ache to read it.
One of the greatest books of all time
I read that book so many times!! To my eldest son born in 1981, (his godmother gave it to him as a gift) and then the other three in turn. I think we wore it out. Lovely illustrations in all her books. Glad people are still using and enjoying them.
My granny used to read me Alfie and Annie Rose. It’s one of the few memories I have of her.
Everyone here is laughing at it because of the Dogging link but Dogger always meant dog shit to me. Was that just a regional thing?
I loved that book when I was a kid
I ADORED this book as a kid and I will not hear a bad word against it
I loved this book as a child! Who am I kidding, I still love it now.
Look, we all agreed in the 1999 referendum on funny names that dogger, although ripe for parody, is too sacred to our collective childhoods to take the piss out of.
Could we make a parody version where a grown man in an anorak hugs a Nissan note teddy and talks about how spaffed up the back seats are? Absolutely we could. But dogger is sacrosanct and joyous, and so we must all resist that urge.
I had the pleasure of meeting Shirley Hughes at a book signing once as a kid. She wrote ‘by hook or by crook I’ll be first in your book’ in my little autograph book.
One of my favourite books as a child. I named my stuffed dog toy after it.
We’re not cancelling Dogger
Nah, nah, nah, this book was amazing when I was a good. This one, the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cat and Mog, I loved them
Shirley Hughes lived near me and I used to see her out and about all the time. She looked like a granny from a Victorian story, complete with shawl and hat and basket trolley. She had beautiful white hair worn in a cottage loaf bun. I miss her. She was a national treasure and it’s an absolute outrage against literature and art that she wasn’t made a Dame.

This book was too much for me as a child. It was also too much for my son. Apparently, we are sensitive souls too attached to our stuffed animals!
