Look I know Christmas is a long ways away, but there are summer holidays and kids are probably starting to bounce of the walls. Pc gaming has always been somewhat popular with kids but it's getting bigger and bigger with the help of influencers and streams. Parents usually have no idea what a pc is but this sure looks the part, large and lots of blinking lights
Now to the meat and potatos. What Smyths are offering here for this price is scandalous. It would be like changing 50 quid for a pint of Guinness. It's outrageously overpriced and seriously underpowered. You could build this same pc if not better for 250. Any other prebuilt will do this for 4-500. Expensive for the other prebulder
Anyways, if you are the tech person in your family you should know it's crap but if you hear of anyone thinking of has bought a pc in Smyths, tell them to leave it back immediately. They got robbed

Pc specialist.ie, GGmachines.ie and any other amount of pre-builders in Ireland and UK while I would never use them myself are far far far cheaper and better options
4 and 8 GB GPUs… Lol
They were selling netbooks as “gaming laptops” awhile ago that came with a subscription for Geforce Now to stream games. No doubt a few got caught out with that too.
That is absolutely shocking. Lots of disappointed kids this crimbo if this says as it is. Terrible behaviour.
“4GB graphics” lol
probably shared system memory too.
“Ryzen 5” – like they are all the same, nothing about model or even generation.
Speaking of Smyths, their over 18 confirmation system when buying a game is so poor. You literally have to scroll back month by month to the year you were born. I emailed them about this ages ago, but it’s still the same. Hey ho off to amazon I go.(yes I like certain games in physical format).
Better advice would be to not buy anything more than a console from a toy shop. Looks like you’re paying hundreds more than necessary here for a few euros worth of LED’s. Good call by OP.
All pre-built PCs, with the exception of high-end workstations (Like Lenovo’s ThinkCentre P series or Dell’s Precision series) are a rip off price-wise and build quality-wise.
I remember when I got my first computer when I was a child. An all in one for around a grand in currys. I was excited to play games on it and saw it had good cpu but didn’t know much about gpus back then. I even asked the sale rep if the screen was 4k and he said yes, while in reality it was 1080p. It served me way longer than I expected but still definitely overpriced, as is most stuff from curries. I got a laptop with an rtx 4060 off Amazon for a pretty decent price and a similar laptop in curries would be considerably more expensive. I guess the lesson from this comment is look to what other places price it’s products, definitely if you see it in currys first
yea in all seriousness guys dont ever buy a prebuilt from Smyths …..
most ideally never buy a prebuilt in general but if you have to do your research look into it and i dont just mean the seller i mean you got to be thorough with this read what all the parts are and look into each and every one of them
Fair play for the head’s up, OP.
Im a console peasant but I’m seriously looking to finally make the great leap to PC. Im sick of being jealous of mods.
€950 bucks for an e-waste special. Made entirely of Chinesium, no doubt.
>What Smyths are offering here for this price is scandalous.
no their not in terms of what every otehr pc shop
Aye that’s a joke.
So many good YouTube’s to watch and bring you through building your own and learning lots in the process. Also it just feels great. Not to mention the savings or bang for buck.
Hold on now don’t be giving the pubs any ideas about a 50 quid Guinness
Saw this before and pretty sure it was Ryzen 4500 and RX550 4gb.
Complete crap. The pc is worth about €300 brand new and the accessories are bottom of the barrel, super low quality.
Not a hope of running newer games on it.
If you don’t build it, it’s half the fun.
My 10yo pc has better specs than that
I can see that wafer thing graphics card through the glass panel, who wants to display that. Lol.
Lots of people going to be ripped off.
Man, i got a [adverts.ie](http://adverts.ie) user to build me a custom PC for €1,500 that makes it look like a super computer compared to this.
They don’t even say which graphics card is in it so I’m assuming it’s a shite one
It’s funny how they show “Product specification”
You still don’t know what you are actually buying.
Simple catchy words for non tech savvy customers.
“Advanced System Features Powerful Desktop: AMD Ryzen 5 CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and 1TB SSD for fast, reliable performance. Dedicated Graphics: 4GB DDR5 for enhanced gaming visuals. Vivid Monitor: 24-inch Full HD monitor with a 75Hz refresh rate for fluid, sharp visuals”
Vivid monitor: Is that a brand? Lol
My guess is that it’s worth about 500 euro max in parts.
PS. I professionally build custom PCs.
That’s a fucking ripoff lol
1500 for a 4060 build.
Pcspecialist has a 5060 build for 1000 and you could get a sick monitor for 2-300.
I worked for the company that is building these for Smyths. I worked there before they got the contract, and knowing the company… I’m not shocked. They dropped shipped 99% of their products from China, company was blatantly sexist against female employees, nothing by the book, incompetent technicians. In the end they ended up begging me to come back as they were understaffed. Don’t buy these.
Its kinda pity as they are decent in for being a bricks and mortar shop that sell console games, but those pics will be a disappointment
That’s just robbing people that don’t have any knowledge of PC’s. Like it proper taking advantage of people.
Smyths PCs are utter fucking scams. They’ve taken it off now but for years they were selling laptops advertised as “perfect for Minecraft and Fortnite” with Minecraft branding all over them that didn’t even meet the minimum system requirements for either game! I feel bad for any child who begged for a gaming computer for Christmas and got something like that, they’re pure misery even just for Chrome and homework.
There’s reams of people all over Reddit who will tell you exactly what to buy and from where when you’re buying or building a PC, just don’t even bother with big toy or electronics shops for desktop computers.
Actually disgusting that they can get away with this
That’s why you shall always do the homework. Don’t buy into something just because it’s written in golden letters. Do your research, folks.
This isn’t something exclusive to Smyths.
You really need to be doing your due diligence and research on all products you buy, especially tech.
I recently went to Harvey Norman to buy an LG OLED TV. It was a Sunday and they didn’t have any available on the shop floor, only out the back which is closed on Sundays.
The sales rep tried to flog me some Samsung LCD for a similar price, yapping that LCD screens are better than OLEDs.
I spared him from proceeding, told him I know my TVs and left him red faced. Left the shop empty handed and went to DID 25 minutes away instead.
Caseking
I worked in Smyth’s over the Christmas a few years back and these were there. I always told people they were awful value and to not touch them and if I had time help them get an actually decent one. Otherwise, send them down to Currys who, whole still over priced, were a lot better
Can you link a rebuilt for sale here for the money you’re quoting?
Buy a refurbished ex-corporate Xeon workstation, with a Nvidia Quadro graphics card, 10 Gigabit Network Card, & lots of RAM. Lenovo Thinkstation , HP Zseries,…… these have robust construction, will last years, and are very expandable, much better than consumer PCs
These guys were the best value I could find: [https://gsccomputers.com/](https://gsccomputers.com/)
Great service.
Anyone could build a PC now. All they’d have to do is ask Gemini.
