Freeport LNG received federal approval for a 40-month extension for its Train 4 expansion project, giving the Brazoria County, Texas, facility until 2031 to finish.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted the extra time in a letter to Freeport LNG on July 17. The company requested the expansion on June 18.

The proposed expansion has received three extensions. An explosion at the facility in 2022 led to ongoing difficulties with the project, and the company said the terminal was not back into a full-service mode until May 2025.

The Train 4 Expansion will add an additional 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG production to the plant, bringing its total capacity to up to 20 mtpa.
