Bus assault victim: ‘People need to feel safer on public transport’

  1. Not looking forward to the return to office at all. Will be leaving work at 10pm to navigate from East Wall to Bus Aras, dodging every scrambler, junkie and scroate along the way. Only then to have to stand outside busAras for 20 minutes again getting asked for smokes, spare change every few minutes.

  2. It’s antisocial behaviour that keeps a lot of people I know from using public transport, especially around Dublin. I don’t give a shite about the price but I don’t want some junkies bothering me on the way home from a night out.

  3. He’s right – but I think we need to apply this to irish society generally, not just the public transport system. Anti social behaviour is a growing problem.

I really think we need a three strikes system – as in three criminal offenses, regardless of how small, will lead to a minimum of 6 months in jail. That would at least reduce the number of scrotes with 250+ convictions walking around.

  4. Never had any incidents on public transport, and I take three to four buses a day for work.

People convince themselves that because something bad unfortunately happens to them, it must be a broad systemic problem.

I’d wonder how many people would gladly pay 1.5-2x the price for a bus/train ticket to account for the staffing costs for some class of security or monitoring, to prevent 0.01% of passengers per trip being seriously assaulted.
