Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has commented on the European Commission’s proposed €2 trillion Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028–2034, following a session of the Council for Slavonia, Baranja, and Srijem held in Slatina.
Plenković said the proposal reflects a balance between traditional EU budget structure and modern political priorities. He emphasized that this is only the initial draft, which must now be reviewed by EU member states and the European Parliament, with negotiations expected to last through 2026 or even into 2027.
“Only when we understand the full methodology and allocation formulas can we speak about Croatia’s national envelope,” he said.
In the previous financial period, Croatia secured nearly €15 billion, plus an additional €10 billion through the EU’s Next Generation recovery instrument and €1 billion from the Solidarity Fund.
Plenković expressed confidence that Croatia will once again secure a favourable outcome, though he noted that new revenue sources may need to be identified to meet the EU’s growing expenditure needs.
