Listening to underrepresented perspectives and continuing our impactful politics coverage.

Hello! I’m Juan Carlos Garcia Martinez, the incoming News and Politics Editor at Tone Madison.
I am a lifelong Wisconsinite and a student in Journalism and Chicano Studies. I’ve done magazine reporting for publications in Milwaukee and Madison, and I’m currently an intern with the Latin American News Digest interpreting news from all across Latin America. Now I’m eager to take on a job that will give me a leading role in this publication’s coverage of politics in Madison.
I am excited to join the hardworking team at Tone Madison and contribute to a cooperative publication committed to independently covering Madison politics. Over the past several years, Tone Madison has produced substantial and original reporting featuring the perspectives that challenge prevailing narratives and hold those in power accountable.
As I pick up where our former News and Politics Editor—now Managing Editor—Christina Lieffring left off, I want to continue prioritizing those aspects that make our reporting worth your time and trust. Our writers report thorough investigations on local politics written in a strong voice backed by factual accuracy that sets our coverage apart from the rest. Our stories are guided by the issues that are relevant to our Madison community, as we remain unafraid to speak truth to power. This means challenging power at any level, whether it’s the issues in our backyard or those that reach statewide. From our reporting, our readers take away not only knowing what happened but possessing the information to understand why it happened.
One of Tone Madison‘s greatest strengths is how it empowers local writers, illustrators, and people who are passionate about local storytelling to create a lasting impact. Keeping our eyes and ears open to the stories that other publications miss is a part of what makes our independent and reader-supported reporting relevant to the Madison community. I want Tone Madison to continue to be a platform for journalists, artists, and all of the diverse voices in our community who deserve a space to share their perspectives. The best way to keep our coverage local is simply through the pursuit of honest, local reporting, by taking input and story pitches from community members.
I believe that finding news not only means going out and finding a story, but listening to the stories that the community shares too! You can reach out to me with the stories you want to read or the words you wish to share at juancarlos@tonemadison.com.
