You could have said no when they told you the price.
You can walk away
I can still remember my outrage at the first time i was charged more than 99p for a 99
*”STOOD THERE WIT ME CAH-SHH”*
Right outside the Natural History Museum is the key here…
“That is gonna get nowhere with that. He should know.”
You scammed yourself by choosing to buy from a van outside NH museum.
Criminals on wheels
There is a Tesco not far from the Natural history museum. You could have gone there and got yourself a whole pack of five, for less than 5 quid. Give four away to the nearest kids.
Where a pissed of northern kid when you need one
“Can I get ….” ❌
“How much is ….” ✅
Osborne’s ice cream van, the one by Imperial College on that same road (Pink and blue van) is the best on that street.
All of these other countless ice cream vans like the one you’ve pictured outside the museum are opportunists. They only recently started operating there, have no prices on their menu, and charge ridiculous prices. Osborne’s have been around for decades, their ice cream tastes good and they give you the option of strawberry or chocolate sauce on your 99 flake, and cheaper than all those other vans there, although not super cheap but I come from the days when a 99 flake was 99p so that’s probably why I hold that opinion 😂 £3.50 for ice cream on a cone without the flake 50p for the flake, as opposed to the around £8 prices from all these other vans on that street.
I have been working near exhibition road for decades. These new ice cream vans (there’s at least 3 of them now) are all full of 💩 con men. I love that you made this post. The prices are never labeled and are extortionate. OK yes they have the more unusual combos for the area, like slushie ice creams and sherbet toppings, but the regular cones are still stupidly expensive, and they all taste of cheap BS that’s 50% air. The weird thing is, they all popped out of nowhere almost literally overnight. Pretty sure they’re all run by the same people.
THE ORIGINAL Ice Cream Van on Exhibition Road has been OSBORNE’S! Its a pink and blue van that you can’t miss, further up near Imperial College, and was the only ice cream van on the block. They have been there for DECADES, and its a shame these thieving newcomers have stepped on their turf, no doubt taking away from their sales. As of now, Osborne’s sells theirs for £3.50 for a small cone (its big), £4 with a flake. Optional sauce for no fee. It tastes thick, rich, and sweet. Excellent quality ice cream. SUPPORT THE LOCAL OGs!!! They truly deserve it too.
Edit: Sounds like Im affiliated with Osborne’s, Im not, theyre just lovely and family run, been part of the scenery for decades, and these new vans come out of nowhere this year robbing everyone blind
if people stopped paying it? them prices wouldn’t be long coming down
Time to start dick-turpin-ing them with that kind of cash on board
Where is she when we need her?!
Not from London, but I am having sympathetic pains.
That’s trial at the Hague material.
Given it’s illegal not to provide the price upfront to a consumer, you would have been perfectly within rights to refuse to pay and return the ice cream to this guy. What’s he going to do, anyway? He’s the one running the con.
The van is displaying both Warner brothers and Disney branding. You have to understand that with that kind of marketing power, the costs of the product have to increase. /s
They make 6-10k on a good day, peanut guys make about 3k. None of them are legal vendors, police move them along occasionally but they’ll just park in Hyde park for an hour then come straight back. Sit right outside the entrances knowing kids will be in the V&A, SM and NHM.
9 pound for just 2 ice creams wi 2 bubblegums in it.
“Mind that child” as he parks up on the pavement.
If you’re in the area again and want ice cream there’s better options closer to South Ken station.
There’s Venchi, which is by the station on Exhibition Road, and if I was choosing one for myself I’d go to Tombo on Thurloe Place (turn west from Exhibition Road) for a matcha ice cream.
Good grief! I’m old enough to remember 3p for an ice cream and 5p for a 99. I’m old, but that’s DECIMAL money.
He’ll get no where wit that!😂
Yeah fuck that. I’d throw it back at them.
Just stop buying them
Just don’t buy one. If everyone did that he would soon lower his prices or go out of business.
