Start with the train to Windermere. TrainPal’s dead handy for that. E-tickets straight to your phone, no faff, and split ticketing works a treat too, sorts cheaper fares if you’re going further. Then jump on the 555 bus to Keswick, takes an hour, single’s £3.
Once there walk 10 mins to Keswick Launch ticket office . Grab a return to Catbells, keep the ticket, you’ll need it for the boat back. The boat loops round Derwentwater, drops you at Hawes End (sixth stop).
Climb up from there, just over 2k to the top, pace depends on you. The scramble’s only a short bit; most of it’s manageable. I ended up going up the back by accident, knackered me right out, but no scrambling, mind. Not recommended that.
Mind the last boat back from Hawes End, hourly, latest around 3:40. Miss that and after 5ish you’re walking back to Keswick town centre. Nearly got stuck there myself but just made the last bus then train home.
