Pioneering IVF: Eight healthy babies born with DNA from three people • FRANCE 24 English

Mitochondria are these little energy producing factories if you like which all our cells contain. They have their own DNA and if that DNA carries a mutation, it can cause a nasty set of diseases where where children can suffer a lot and and die. We take eggs from the patient and from a donor and we fertilize them and around about 8 hours later we perform the technique. So, we remove the nuclear DNA from the patient’s egg and transplant that into the fertilized egg from a donor that’s had its nuclear DNA removed. It’s such a privilege to be able to perform the procedure and watch these embryos carry on developing as if the technique hadn’t even been done and ultimately find out that the ladies are pregnant and have these healthy babies.

Eight healthy babies were born in the UK with the help of an experimental #IVF procedure that uses #DNA from three people to help mothers avoid passing life-threatening genetic diseases to their children.
