“The Home Office’s annual accounts, external show £2.1bn was spent on hotel accommodation – an average of about £5.77m per day, down from £3bn or £8.3m per day, the previous year.
BBC News understands the majority of people moved out of hotels are now living in local housing, or houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), a type of rented accommodation where at least three individuals share the use of a bathroom and kitchen.
Most of these properties have been acquired through the government’s contracts with Serco, one of the three companies responsible for asylum accommodation.”

So the cost has been transferred to paying for housing instead?
Terrible article. Doesn’t even mention the obvious question of if the asylum hotel bill has gone down by how much has the other accommodation bill gone up by?
Total spending could be increasing and we wouldn’t know.
This is funfair whack-a-mole politics at this point.
Moving costs from 1 dept to another…yours and mine local council I expect.
Yes cause they elected for an even worse alternative…taking private rental accommodation and spreading them around…so now people won’t know where rhey are at all. Its a disaster.
Spollox!
BBC shitting in everyone’s eye and calling it news.
70% to go.
Labour MPs should be angry that they could have billions and billions more in their war chest to improve the country and make them more likeable. But they are simply too weak and terrified of being called racist. This crisis could be ended overnight, it would take some uncomfortable action such as towing boats back to France and seeing what they would do as a reaction, but it’s going to destroy the nation of the numbers continue. So few are deported because of HOOMAN WIGHTS laws, once they feel British soil on their feet, that’s it, we are paying hundreds of thousands for each one of them over the course of their lives
Hotel bill, not the total bill…pay attention to their language
They’re all in tents now that’s why
So there’s a corresponding increase in other parts of the welfare bill?
Wahey!! What a result
Starting to use all the loyalty points they built up over the years.
