Syria accuses Israel of trying to destabilise country through airstrikes • FRANCE 24 English
It seemed a hopeful sign when Syrian state TV showed government forces pulling out of the southern city of Sueda. The withdrawal followed days of deadly clashes between two religious groups there. The Drews minority allied with Israel and the Sunni Bedwins. But a renewed offensive by the Bedwins has proved that the latest ceasefire agreement is tenuous at best. In response to the conflict on Wednesday, Israel unleashed a series of attacks on Damascus. Israel said it was responding to reports of atrocities against the Drews minority. A local mayor in a Drews community in the occupied Golden Heights called on further military action by Israel. Children are being murdered. Girls are raped. Babies are mutilated. Entire families are wiped out. and no one is stopping it. Late Thursday, the Israeli prime minister said his goal was to protect the Drews minority, but primarily to demilitarize the area south of Damascus near the Israeli border. This is a ceasefire in Syria achieved through force, not through requests, not through please, through force. Turkey, which helped negotiate one of the two ceasefires, was quick to lay blame on Israel. Using the Drew’s population as an excuse, Israel has extended its banditry into our neighbor Syria over the past two days. Let me say this once again openly and clearly. Israel is a rogue state. The US said it was working toward a deescalation with the State Department making a key distinction. I can tell you regarding Israel’s intervention uh and activity is the United States did not support recent Israeli strikes. We are engaging diplomatically with Israel and Syria at the highest levels. The violence in Sua has reportedly killed hundreds and displaced thousands in recent days.

Meanwhile, the United States—despite being a close ally of Israel—voiced opposition to the strikes on July 17, just one day after helping to broker a deal aimed at ending the violence.
