Written by a former member of the Duma, this piece compares the way Putin used the law to solidify autocratic control over his country, with what’s happening in the US. The writer singles out the Supreme Court ruling allowing Trump to mass fire civil service workers as akin to Putin canceling gubernatorial elections in 2004. It diagnoses the internal mechanisms of modern autocracy.
Tell us something we don’t know.
With a leader that is just as corrupt and violent but even more incompetent than Putin. I hope the Europeans learn from this lesson
Oh for sure. Propping up a boogeyman helps sell American weapons. Sad that Ukraine and Europe is getting played
When Trump starts nationalizing businesses of his political opponents, then we can talk about making comparisons
Here comes the Russian disinformation campaign now that Trump is backing Ukraine… I’m sure we will start seeing a lot of this.
It’s worrisome to see so many people in this thread reject notion that USA is on a clear path to become authoritarian state just like Russia or claim that democracy in USA is too strong to be swept aside easily.
What would convince you?
Republican party is undermining fair election and democracy for decades now: REDMAP, blocking democratic nominations to Supreme Court and esentially making sure it will remain republican for next generation, introducing voter supression laws (Kemp’s SB202 in GA, Abbott’s SB1 in TX, DeSantis’ Office of Election Crimes that e.g. arresting legally voting ex convicts), attempt to falisy (Trump’s call where he demanded to “find” votes they need to win, etc.) and overturn 2020 elections (147 Republicans voted to object certification of Biden’s win in 2020), dismantling Voting Rights Act, ALEC (that churns out conservative laws behind closed doors for states to implement), Republican supported Citizen United v FEC ruling that allows to bankroll campaigns, Powell Memo, Republicans limiting governors powers via quickly introduced legislations when their candidate loses (Winsconsin or North Carolina as examples), push for new constitutional convention.
For last 50 years Republicans are working hard to gut US democracy and replace it with oligarchy. It’s already happening for years. In last decade it just became painfully obvious and that means they believe they are on homestretch and will finally achieve their goal. My guess is in next 4 years if they win midterms (and oh boy let me tell you right now, they will make sure they win it)
Brain rot in Western society is leading to twisted, bitter and negative perspectives outweighing those who actually carry a nation, and make a nation great.
It’s worrying. It looks more Nazi/Russian with every year that passes.
How? Russian institutions are very different than American ones…
And how is unitary executive theory akin to cancelling gubernatorial elections?
That couldn’t even happen in the US, as each state runs their own election process
