Millions more pensioners will receive Winter Fuel Payments this year following a U-turn by the Government.

New qualifying rules have been put in place for this year following a backlash over cuts to the support scheme.

Around 75% of pensioners will now get the payments, worth up to £300.

But the support, which used to be universal, still won’t go to everyone.

Individuals will not qualify if they have annual incomes of over £35,000.

One member of a couple can still get it if they earn under that amount and their partner doesn’t.

Minister said the new system would be fairer, ensuring those that need the winter support will get it.
