Dana White has poured cold water on Jon Jones’ plan for one last fight at the White House, just days after branding him a ‘dream’ headliner.

The UFC CEO will put on what he has called the ‘baddest card ever’ on July 4 next summer when he delivers an unprecedented pay-per-view event from the White House lawn. President Donald Trump, a major fight fan, is backing the event as a key part of America’s 250th birthday celebrations.

Legendary former two-weight world champion Jones was one of many star fighters looking to compete, with Conor McGregor also campaigning for a spot on the card. But it seems that the controversial New Yorker might be a bridge too far for headlining on the White House lawn.

Dana White shuts down Jon Jones’ plan to fight at the White House

After retiring in the middle of June, it only took until early July for Jon Jones to announce his intentions to fight again after learning of President Trump’s plans for an event at the White House. Jones’ politics are not widely known, but he famously jumped the cage to present the President with his belt at UFC 309.

However, Dana White doesn’t seem too keen on the idea, noting that Jones is far from the most reliable fighter on the UFC’s roster. Speaking at a press conference after UFC 318 in Louisiana on Saturday night he was asked about the possibility of Jones returning and taking the belt with no plans to defend.

“It’s not even about him winning the belt,” White explained. “You know how I felt about him. You know I can’t risk putting him in big positions in a big spot and have something go wrong – especially the White House card.”

Dana White branded Jon Jones ‘dream’ White House headliner just days ago

It’s a pretty dramatic U-Turn for White, who just days ago told the Nelk Boys on their Full Send Podcast that Jones vs Tom Aspinall would be his dream headliner for the show. The Brit was awarded the undisputed title after spending over a year as interim champion when his rival retired in June.

And White even teased that Jones could share the card with McGregor in what would be an unheard of level of star power on one show. “The dream main event would be Aspinall vs. Jones,” White answered when asked what he would ideally see headline.

Both Jones and McGregor have claimed to have reentered the UFC’s drug testing pool with plenty of time to pass the requisite amount of tests before next summer. But it remains to be seen if either will actually get the shot they are craving.
