US marines defeated by Finnish conscripts during a NATO exercise

  1. > The Finnish troops won the US Marines during the exercises.

They’re ours now. Thanks Google translate.

  2. Maybe Finland is the supreme NATO candidate jk.

But that shows Finland is a tough one. Lol. I wonder what Russia has to say about this with its rust bucket they call an ‘army.’

  3. > The Marines are considered perhaps the most famous group of professional soldiers in the world

    Famous yes, competent, no.

The US marines, despite beliefs to the contrary, aren’t actually that good. Sure they put on a good show to the Americans but their pass standards for physical fitness would see even a female military band member in the British army fail the UK basic fitness test and their training and doctrine pretty much revolves around conventional battles and having lots of support from artillery and air which the US are used to dominating the area in. The training of the British Forces in comparison for example, and I suspect the Finnish forces are the same, is based more around guerilla type warfare, much smaller units that are much more mobile with quick strike and fuck off tactics rather than turn up en-masse and act as a bullet magnet. Some US forces follow the guerrilla warfare doctrine such as the US Navy Seals but the biggest bulk don’t.

  4. “- One day we noticed helicopters landing in the area next to the battalion’s command post, Kuokka writes.

The landing of the American Marines surprised us. But it was clear that our well-disguised grouping also surprised them. Their intelligence had not spotted us in advance.

The headquarters and communications company were grouped for close defense. In the resulting firefight, the referees were unanimous – the landing was destroyed.”

Ahh, the Classic. The [trees started speaking Finnish](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/G2dpDu0Y3_M).

  5. Listen, having been on a NATO exercise myself, Scandinavian soldiers tend to out-perform their foreign colleagues in artic warfare maneuvering. It’s because we all grew up here and are just used to the conditions.

This is the reason they send their soldiers here to train, and we often send our soldiers to the US and other places to learn thing they know better.

  6. The thing is..

in my opinion, the US military is not *that* good in terms of technique/skills and I think the British/French/Israelis/Aussies/Finnish are better in that aspect.

The thing that makes the US able to be the world military power is that it’s ***very*** wealthy and can just outspend and outproduce most opponents regardless (and logistics) too.

This isn’t a dig at the US – I just mean they’re able to lose a lot in skill/technique because they make up for it in equipment quality and quantity

  7. Do people think the US is never going to lose a battle? Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Hopefully you learn from both

  8. This sounds like the USMC was trying to make a contested landing and the Finnish conscripts were the defending force.

That’s a pretty great scenario. It’s basically perfect for both sides to learn what they are likely to do.

The USMC needs to relearn how to make contested landings, especially since it basically hasn’t been done with modern weapons. But that is likely to be a major part of what they will be doing in any conflict in the Pacific, so they need to learn lessons the hard way right now. The defenders naturally have the advantage, so if we can’t overcome conscripts right now, we’ll get destroyed by professional soldiers when it’s happening for real.

  9. These excersises are arranged so that everyone involved might learn from whatever circumstances and events arise. It’s not a sport where you celebrate whoever sported best and is thus crowned ultimate sporter.

Also the source is a tabloid, which while usually reliable, often uses misinformed headlines such as this one as clickbait.
