The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a public design contest for the next generation of euro banknotes, inviting graphic designers from across the EU to help shape the future look of the currency.
The competition follows public and expert consultation and centers around two shortlisted themes: “European culture” and “Rivers and birds.” The themes aim to reflect Europe’s cultural identity and natural heritage.
Designers will undergo a two-phase process, beginning with an application stage where qualifications and past work will be assessed. Those selected will then submit design proposals, to be evaluated by an independent jury. Up to five finalists will be chosen per theme.
“The euro is more than a currency – it symbolizes European unity and diversity,” ECB President Christine Lagarde said. “Through this contest, we invite designers across Europe to shape the future of our banknotes to reflect our shared cultural identity and natural heritage.”
The public will later be invited to give feedback on the shortlisted designs. A final decision on the new banknotes is expected by the end of 2026, with circulation to follow in subsequent years.
Applications must be submitted by 1 p.m. (Greek time) on 18 August. More information is available on the ECB’s website.
