ROGOZNICA, 20 July 2025 – A deeply rooted tradition has once again been brought to life in the Dalmatian village of Rogoznica, as locals and visitors came together to honour a 303-year-old ritual.

On Sunday, the returning the image of Our Lady by boat from the Parish Church to the small chapel on the Gradina peninsula took place, drawing a crowd of both faithful residents and intrigued tourists.

The annual procession, which combines both land and sea elements, is a unique blend of religious observance and cultural heritage, and captivated onlookers with its beauty and spirit.

At the heart of the tradition is the votive sanctuary of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, affectionately known to locals as Our Lady of the Chapel.

This sacred site, located at the entrance of Rogoznica harbour, holds a special place in the hearts of the community.

The origins of the tradition date back to 1722, when a local fisherman named Juraj Bogavčić, known by the nickname Tuburko, reported seeing a mysterious light beneath a stone slab.

Beneath it, he discovered an image depicting the Visitation of the Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. After taking the image home, it inexplicably vanished and reappeared at the original spot the following day.

This occurrence stirred the local community, and after several similar incidents, the townspeople decided to build a chapel at the site in 1776 to house the revered image permanently.
