I kind of got desensitized to the service charge already, but carbon free dining? That’s something new

  1. I mean ik all for compromise and sensible measures and so on and so forth, but if you’re serving roast beef…. a climate change surcharge seems somewhat hypocritical.

  2. There is even a service charge on your carbon free dining donation…

  3. If it says “optional” tell the waiter to take it off. They are using you to subsidize their green marketing material. Dont stand for that bullshit.

And if the local Londoner dont tip, then they gotta speak up about that, otherwise us American tourists are gonna see a 12% tip, think that is low, and pay it anyway.

    Edit:grammar

  4. That is the fee that guarantees the toast or steak will not be burnt and remain carbon free.

  5. Biggest surprise is that you had bread, mains and a dessert but only had one medium glass of wine each throughout the meal.

  6. Can I have “extra carbon” with my meal please? Whats the change for that ?

  7. I absolutely would not pay service charge on other charges, wtf is that? They get service on the food, not the bullshit they tack on

  8. This is so aggressively LDN. I remember i was once charged a service charge on top of paying £15 for 2 pints. Fucking clown shit

  9. Yep, they’re charging you more now not to overcook the beef 🥩

  10. You can take the service charge off for trying that on

  11. It’s an optional donation to a carbon-offsetting tree planting social impact enterprise .

    https://plant.gifttrees.com/gifttrees-restaurants/

I’m fine with this kind of offset charge but I’d like to see some more positive impact reporting and accreditation on the website.
And the service charge shouldn’t be bumped because of this charge.

  12. They do something similar to Elliot’s at Borough Market. Donation to some charity. I asked the waiter what kind of charity is that, what they do etc, told them is a shitty move and looks it has become a trend. He said he doesn’t like it either and he will remove it from the bill. Since I learned about the charity I was ok to give money.

But yeah. We should not normalise this. Ask. Keep asking even if you know the charity and decline if you feel uncomfortable or not in the mood to give. It shouldn’t become a standard like the tip-service charge.

  13. So, they whack on a service charge, without asking and then a carbon charge.. can you ask for all of it to be taken off?

I got stupid charges like this when I was last up in Knightsbridge. I kicked off.

  14. I think the real story here is that you paid 100 quid for what amounts to 2 roast beef sandwiches.

  15. As a long time restaurant owner and operator I hate this shit. It’s lazy. Update your menu instead of adding fees. If it were me, I would never go back and, if it wasn’t disclaimed prior to me ordering, I’d dispute the fuck out of that shit. All fees must be disclaimed prior to ordering. Lazy bastards.

  16. Na tell them to pull this off, even charging the service on this junk fee lmao

  17. Unrelated note but charging for the usually free bread is… interesting

  18. Well if its optional did they give a choice? If not they shouldn’t be charging

  19. At a place called “The Pig And Butcher”. Hope they don’t Google the emissions and pollution from pig and cow farming.

  20. This is bs OP – pls tell me you asked for it to be removed?
Also, why do they charge tip on VAT? I just don’t get it.

  21. Optional charge that we won’t ask you about we’ll just charge it.

  22. How did they do that because carbon is in everything including the people, food, spacial dimensions and the equipment plus literally everything else…

Did they hold their breath as well?

    This is becoming ridiculous…

  23. This is in Angel? Think it deserves a review so they drop this. More ethical would be putting the carbon tax into the cost of the beef and then paying it out of the profits… What they have done is just filthy.

  24. So you even pay for a service charge on the carbon free dining?

  25. Ugh and that scammy ‘discretionary’ service charge which should be illegal.

  26. Funny how they marked the carbon free dining donation as optional but don’t mention that the service charge is optional.

  27. Do not pay it.

Look, I want to save the planet too but this will do zero to help that cause. It’s a scam.
