Turkey is close to securing a multibillion-dollar preliminary agreement to purchase Eurofighter Typhoon jets, potentially announcing the deal as early as this week, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

Citing sources familiar with the negotiations, the WSJ said the order could be worth up to $5.6 billion and include as many as 40 jets, though the final number and specifications remain under discussion.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is produced by a European consortium of BAE Systems, Airbus and Leonardo.

Turkey has sought Eurofighters since 2023 but talks stalled due to Germany’s initial reluctance to approve export licenses. The German government has signaled support, potentially clearing the path for an agreement to be unveiled at the International Defense Industry Fair in Istanbul, which begins Tuesday and runs until Sunday.

Earlier, it was reported that Turkish President Recep Erdogan said Germany and Britain have taken a positive stance on the sale of Eurofighter jets to Turkey, adding that Ankara wants to finalize the purchase as soon as possible.
