Franstalig België valt over debat Bouchez-Van Grieken: “Met extreemrechts debatteer je niet, je bestrijdt het”

  1. Can’t really agree with this. In a democracy you debate eachother, simple as that. If far-right is wrong than prove them wrong in a debate. Prove their empty slogans to be exactly that … I’m glad Bouchez did this

I find it weird how liberals and leftwing are constantly talking about inclusiveness and tolerance, while at the same time shouting about how certain groups need to be silenced and excluded at all costs. Feels kinda weird

  2. >Er zijn ernstige studies die aantonen dat de verkiezingsresultaten van extreemrechts klein blijven als het wordt uitgesloten van debatten

I mean, trying to ignore them doesn’t exactly work either since I’m fairly sure (or at least hope) that a lot of extreme right votes are protest votes against the established parties.

  3. This was probably one of the best – if not the best – outright dunking I’ve seen any centrist politician perform on a populist in years. I think it’s great that it happened. VB getting some 25% of the vote means a lot of those voters aren’t the hardcore radical group, but rather the disaffected/disillusioned who can still be “converted” back to normalcy. Debates like these are thus necessary.

  6. Don’t know if it is already mentioned somewhere in the comments.
If you’re interested in this idea a dutch prof, Leonie de Jonge, wrote a book on this subject.

*The Curious Case of Belgium: Why is There no Right-Wing Populism in Wallonia?*

Never read it myself, but I heard a podcast with her once and it sounded very interesting.

Here’s an article she wrote about this theme: [https://stukroodvlees.nl/het-raadsel-van-wallonie-waarom-radicaal-rechts-niet-van-de-grond-komt-in-franstalig-belgie/](https://stukroodvlees.nl/het-raadsel-van-wallonie-waarom-radicaal-rechts-niet-van-de-grond-komt-in-franstalig-belgie/) (dutch)

  7. Honestly the way VB has been normalized by Flemish media does deserve criticism. However, I do think that if you have someone agressive enough like Bouchez debating them can be a good thing. I can understand why the RTBF has the policy of not inviting some random maniac on for the sake of balance so that they can spout absolute drivel that plays well on the soundbites.

What I don’t like about Bouchez is his false equivalence between PTB and VB, and the way he centralizes the whole thing around his image. He’s a wannabe Napoleon himself.

  8. silencing or ignoring people with different opinions rarely turned into something positive, if we look at history…

  9. any people from Wallonia care to explain the hate for this? I just heard Christophe Deborsu talking on the radio that he would rather resign than having an interview with VB

  10. I totally understand Paul Magnette’s point, if he reinforces the cordon his party is ALWAYS required.

But i don’t agree with him. Structurally Ignoring ~20% of 60% of the country is not a good idea.
Furthermore I don’t think VB will ever want to govern, as that would expose them to making compromises and disappoint his voters.

  11. Wanting some sort of unwritten ban of debating with a party and calling yourself democratic lmao.
