  1. The world’s first official stock market was established in Amsterdam in 1602, during a period of rapid European expansion in trade and exploration. It was closely tied to the founding of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, or VOC), which was created with the direct support and authorization of the Dutch government. In an unprecedented move, the government granted the VOC a trade monopoly in Asia and allowed it to raise capital by issuing shares to the public. This marked the first time in history that private citizens could invest in a company and receive dividends from its profits, laying the groundwork for modern equity markets.

  2. the very creation and maintenance of private property is an act of state…

  3. Well, 6000 years ago someone traded a goat for 8 chickens. I feel like government didn’t set the terms of that trade.

  4. The issue with this is that, instead of saying govt its should be something like authority. Authorities and markets go hand in hand when theres not always an actual government to speak of in some scenarios.

  5. Robert Reich is a shameless propagandist. Markets persist in spite of government.

  6. Yah, stable insistutions is what creates wealthy countries and that includes a stable government. That means that

    1. Investors are confident that they will get their money back
    2. Whatever I invest in or own will still be there and protected by the government
    3. I can invest in myself by pursuing and education within a specialized field and expect to build a long lasting and profitable career

  7. Robert ignoring the existence of functional black markets. Also barter proceeded Homosapiens, its clear that even Homo Heidelbergenis was doing some light engineering building docks over marshes to spear fish, along with permanent structures or at least seasonally permanent, and engaging in light bartering, the last is behavior that can be observed in Chimps and other intelligent apes. Macaque monkeys regularly steal peoples phones knowing they can barter it for food it’s not a stretch to assume that our ancient ancestors from 800k years ago could do some basic bartering.

It is fair to say that money and writing emerged from the tribute system, kings would walk up to a city with their army and say recognize me as king of the universe or I won’t sell you any more food, normally they’d pay the tribute to be part of an alliance or empire, essentially it was an insurance payment for security. Kings then needed people to keep track of it and used priests who likely already had their own local form of writing to pass on religious and medicinal knowledge.
