Is it legal to take this with me to Belgium from China?
22.07.2025
Would it be troublesome to bring these with me to the airport (images attached), I have an autistic bug-enthousiast friend who would love to have these as a gift. They are real and dead.
If the species aren’t endangered yes, but you will need to prove what species they are. China has a big problem with black market animals.
unless you have proper documentation, they’re going to at least get held.
since it’s not clear if they’re protected or not, and the customs officers don’t have that expertise, they will have to hold them, and send pictures to the CITES experts at FAVV (AFSCA or FASFC), which will then have to determine the protected status.
if it then turns out they’re not protected, you’ll get an invite some time later to pick them up at the airport. if they are, expect a fine, and they’ll not be returned to you.
There is not enough cruelty in World, thank you for helping a cause.
Ga weg!
Maybe also talk to the Belgian embassy in China. Or ship them separately.
I have a bunch of those I bought in Belgium. They’re also all over AliExpress if you wanna order them and don’t risk bringing them in yourself. (“Insect in resin”)
Please don’t buy shit like this, especially not from countries that are known for murky ethics when it comes to animal welfare. This is an industry. These animals did not die of natural causes. Your other comment suggests that possibility, but that’s not how it’s done.
I’m a bug lover and I would hate to receive these, even if my friend meant well.
They sold these things in hong kong. I brought some in resin in 2017.. I had luggage control on arrival, they saw them. It was no issue. So i guess it’s fine.
Are they alive?
If you bought these in a souvenirshop (guess you did). It’s fine
No. No. No. keep that foreign shit out of our biodome
Even if they make a stink about it, just part with them. These cost like five euro each on alibaba, I have quite the collection from finding at a local rommelmarkt.
Send it by mail
In Belgium you can do anything as long you pay taxes.
Are they fully sealed in in epoxy?
I took similar keychains back around 5 years ago from China to Europe
Throw them in checked luggage if ur that scared lmao, the belgium fbi will send you a big scary fine for sum random bugs🙃
Right one is likely a Rose chafer (Cetonia aurata) which is a common insect in Asia, Europa and the US. Unless it’s some very similar looking rare species of course, but Rose chafer is most likely.
