Extra leave and flexible working hours for parents under new bill

  1. I’m assuming that this is open to everyone and they aren’t just discriminating by specifically saying only parents can avail of more flexible working conditions?

  2. This is great news and really helpful for parents with kids in childcare. As it stands if a kid is sick, they can’t attend school or childcare. So a working parent has to take annual leave while still having to pay for childcare still while the kid is home. This will give those parents some bit of a break in that they won’t have to lose annual leave.

  3. It’s unfortunate that the five days for caring for a child is unpaid. It’s better than nothing but it still relies on the employee having the finances to go a week without salary instead of using annual leave.

Curious about the breastfeeding thing.. I didn’t think many women breastfed for two years.

Edit: my comment re. breastfeeding til 2 wasn’t a criticism.. just genuine curiosity. I had no idea it was recommended for that length of time. Good to see the gov giving the extra hour.

  4. The worst thing for climate change is having kids – shouldn’t be encouraging people to have kids if you care about climate change.

  5. It is fascinating to see the number of people who just can’t stand the idea that anything might improve for someone else, even when it doesn’t affect them at all. Imagine living like that.

Some of you don’t have to, to judge by the remarks here.

  6. My company already allows for sick time usage to care for children in a way that doesn’t pull from our vacation balance or anything like that. Good to see the government catching up.

  7. 1 hour a day for breastfeeding for 104 weeks seems mad. Assuming the mother takes 12 months maternity leave (think it’s 9 paid and 3 unpaid) , then they get an additional 33 paid days off after that period (104 – 48 for mat leave=56/8 hour day). Big businesses can eat that cost, but small business will be further out off by that

And not improvements to paternity leave at all?

  8. It’s fantastic for parents , but it feels like choosing to not have kids leave you at a disadvantage nowadays.

You get less paid time off for sure.

It’d be nice to see the legislation opened up for all workers to have more flexibility rather than just parents.

People without kids like to do stuff too!!
