The Greek Orthodox Communities of New South Wales and Melbourne & Victoria have announced the return of the Greek Film Festival of Australia, marking its 30th anniversary with screenings set to begin on October 14 in Sydney and Melbourne.
Running through October 26, the festival will showcase a curated lineup of recent Greek and Greek-themed independent films, alongside a retrospective of acclaimed titles from the festival’s three-decade history.
Among the highlights is the return of “The Flea” (“O Psyllos”), directed by Dimitris Spyrou – the film that opened the inaugural Greek Film Festival in Australia – offering audiences a nod to the event’s origins.
Opening night galas will take place in both cities on October 14. The opening film has yet to be announced.
This year’s edition will also expand beyond Sydney and Melbourne, with screenings planned for Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, and Perth in late October and early November.
Final dates for those cities will be confirmed soon.
“Reaching our 30th anniversary is not just a milestone; it’s a testament to the enduring power of Greek cinema and the unwavering dedication of our community,” said Nia Karteris, chair of the Greek Festival and Greek Film Festival of Sydney.
Details on the full program, special events, and a guest of honor from Greece are expected in the coming weeks.
