In Lausanne in 2024, tenant evictions increased by more than 12 percent – mainly in the Renens suburb of Lausanne, where many immigrants live, recently published statistics show, albinfo.ch reports.

For Fabrice Berney, Secretary General of the Tenants’ Association (ASLOCA) in Vaud, “the increase in rent, unjustified in the vast majority of cases, and the decline in the financial capacity of the middle classes are the two main explanations for this phenomenon.”

And this trend is also growing in other French-speaking cantons.

In Geneva, 239 forced evictions were carried out in 2024 – the highest number in eight years.

But most tenants were evicted in Valais, where the number of those forced to vacate their apartments rose from 120 in 2020 to 761 in 2024.

“Landlords have no interest in being lenient with the tenant because they know they will quickly find another one,” said Carole Wahlen, an attorney for ASLOCA. “And during that process, they can raise the rent. The pressure on tenants is extreme.”
