Located near the Russian border, the tranquil Ukrainian town of Okhtyrka became a crucial battlefield in the early stages of the full-scale war. Heroically repelling Russian troops on the onset of the invasion, the town endured a subsequent month of semi-encirclement and relentless enemy fire, which damaged over 700 buildings and destroyed essential urban infrastructure.
Years later, Okhtyrka’s community is setting the standards for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction. Once famous for their resilience, its residents are now excelling in their innovative approach to post-war restoration, spearheaded by a local activist.
