Aren’t they completely revamping the leaving cert curriculum next year?
The whole model needs to be updated imo to fit the modern world.
Children do not need long summer holidays to help with the harvest anymore. The school days should be longer with homework done during those hours as well as physical or mental education.
Far more importance should be placed on IT anyway as well as PE and have a longer school day and shorter summer holiday period will allow for more subjects to be covered.
Every kid should be able to do the basics like know how to drive a car, how to do basic car service, how to cook basic meals, how to do basic house maintenance.
Exams should be every quarter, marked independently instead of one big final exam.
I think a lot more should be done to explain the subject, even an argument to make that it should be mandatory since it should give some one good practical skills for independence.
In my time, you weren’t a a “manly” 11 year old or 14 year old of you did it instead of metalwork or engineering as it competed with those subjects.
Maybe every 50 years or so…
I know you’re talking about secondary here, but to give you an idea it takes around 10 years to implement a new primary curriculum. It takes years to introduce a curriculum for a subject and to get properly familiar with it so that it can be taught as well as possible, so it would make no sense to overhaul it too often. Small updates to subjects like SPHE to keep them up to date would be a good idea.
Was in a boy’s school in secondary school. No metal work, no home EC.
In my school, for the LC, you choose 4 subjects out of 11. You could choose Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, French, Accounting, Business, Economics, Woodwork and TechGraph. You could choose to do German, Music and applied maths after school.
