A man who in 2023 pleaded guilty to misdemeanor cruelty to animals charges for mistreatment of turkeys being raised for Plainville Farms has now pleaded guilty to another charge of cruelty to animals.
On July 22, Francisco Mitchell Lebron-Cruz entered the plea in Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred in Perry County, Pennsylvania.
According to a press release from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Lebron-Cruz was convicted for “wringing a turkey’s neck, causing the bird to flap and thrash face-down for around 30 seconds” and later grabbing “the still-writhing turkey” and throwing it on the floor.
With the guilty plea, Lebron Cruz was sentenced to one year of probation. He is also not allowed to obtain employment that would involve the care of animals.
The case’s court docket number is CP-21-CR-0002496-2024, and the case was prosecuted by Cumberland County First Assistant District Attorney Courtney E. Hair LaRue.
Lebron-Cruz pleaded guilty to another abuse situation involving turkeys being raised for Plainville Farms in Union County. The sentence he was given then was the same as he was for the most recent conviction.
The court action stems from criminal charges that were filed after PETA (PETA) circulated a video in August 2021. That video depicted scenes of turkeys raised for Plainville Farms being thrown, kicked and picked up by their necks, as well as being subjected to other forms of mistreatment.
Shortly after the video was released, Plainville Farms announced it was cooperating with law enforcement agencies and had launched its own investigation into the matter. That investigation led to the termination of 13 employees, as well as the purchase of body cameras for a third-party animal welfare specialist to monitor all live operations by employees.
Ten people have been convicted on charges related to this investigation, with Lebron-Cruz being the only person to have been convicted in two charges.
The company also replaced catching employees with a third-party vendor to provide catching services.
Plainville Farms, according to information from the WATTPoultry.com Top Poultry Companies Database, is the tenth largest turkey producer in the United States. The company is based in New Oxford, Pennsylvania.
