LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A local non-profit group that assists the migrant community is up in arms.

They’re disturbed by a cell phone video that they say shows Border Patrol and Florida Highway Patrol detaining several people, including a U.S. citizen and even tasing one of them during a traffic stop on Singer Island.

The Trump Administration has vowed to deport undocumented people who are in the U.S. illegally.

But the Guatemalan-Maya Center in Lake Worth Beach says what happened during a recent traffic stop on Singer Island is unacceptable and it was caught on video.

May 2, the Florida Highway Patrol and Border Patrol stopped a car on Singer Island with an 18-year-old landscaper, who’s a U.S. citizen, and three of his coworkers, including his mother.

And cell phone video shows what happened next.

“Wait, hey, you can’t grab me like that. You can’t grab me like that. Hey. Put your f—-ing head down! Get on the ground! Hey, wait! That’s not how you arrest people. Get on the ground! That’s not how you arrest people. Get on the ground! Now! On the ground! All right, but you’re not… Now! On the ground. All right. Hold on, hold on, hold on,” can be heard in the cell phone video.

The video shows one of the people who was detained by Border Patrol and FHP was grabbed by the neck and placed in a chokehold.

The Guatemalan-Maya Center, a non-profit advocacy group that assists the migrant community in South Florida, says the incident was a nightmare for the people who went through it.

“I just thought it was so atrocious but I also wasn’t surprised because it’s really representative of what’s going on throughout the United States right now,” said Lindsay McElroy, Lead Immigrant Justice Organizer, Guatemalan-Maya Center, 1776 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth Beach.

The video shows that one of the individuals was also tased during the incident.

“Hey what you guys doin’? That’s not how you arrest people. If you all are gonna arrest people, you all gotta arrest people regular. What you all doin’ bro? Hey! Hey! No resistance. Hey, hey! man is moaning after being tased, Get on the ground!” can be heard in the video clip.

“Honestly, I was appalled by the video and I was also heartbroken to see a young man get tased like that so painfully to the point where he actually started bleeding,” McElroy said.

She says 18-year-old Kenny Laynez, a Florida resident and U.S. citizen, was detained that day for six hours.

“Kenny was treated horribly. Kenny is a United States citizen who was born in West Palm Beach, in St. Mary’s (Medical Center),” she explained.

At one point in the video, agents are laughing and talking about a $30,000 bonus they hope to get.

“Just remember, you can smell that too. A $30,000 bonus. Yeah,” one of them said as they laughed.

McElroy feels incidents like this are the tip of the iceberg.

“This is happening because there’s such hateful rhetoric coming from the current administration, because there’s such hateful and dangerous policies that are being implemented that are really stripping people of their basic human rights,” McElroy said.
