PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – A North Country town is working to strengthen international ties with our neighbors to the north.
Plattsburgh’s town supervisor and the mayor of the Canadian city of Cornwall signed a “Declaration of Friendship” on Thursday.
The signing marked the end of a daylong Ambassador of Friendship Visitation, where leaders discussed cross-border tourism and regional partnerships.
The goal is to promote unity amid tensions between the U.S. and Canada over tariffs and political rhetoric.
“We often refer to ourselves as Montreal’s U.S. suburbs, but we are much more than that. We are much more than that, we are a gateway to Canada, and that goes both north and south, and we have great admiration and appreciation for our Canadian friends… and this is an opportunity to demonstrate that,” Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman said.
Cashman will make a reciprocal visit to the city of Cornwall in Ontario next month, where he will be hosted by Mayor Justin Towndale.
