Syrian government says fighting in Sweida ‘halted’ after tribal forces pull out • FRANCE 24

There is a fragile peace in the southern Syrian city of Sueda. After a week of intense sectarian fighting between the Drews and Sunni Bedoan tribes, there is a pause in hostilities. Tribal reinforcements came from across Syria to support the Bedawins, but Syria’s government forces have cleared them out of the area. The goal of the agreement is to redeploy the internal security forces in the province to secure public and private property, ensure the safety of civilians, oversee the withdrawal of tribal fighters who are clashing with outlaw groups, allow humanitarian aid to enter Sueda, and secure safe passage for civilians who want to leave the province. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that more than 900 people have been killed so far. Tens of thousands have been displaced from their homes. The clashes pose a significant security challenge to Syria’s new government, which is trying to establish itself and assert its authority. The government has come under intense criticism for its handling of the conflict. It was initially accused of supporting the Bedawins, drawing in Israel, who launched air strikes on Damascus to protect the Drews. After announcing a 48our ceasefire on Saturday, the country’s minister of information defended the government’s actions. The recent events were not a military operation launched by the state, nor were they a military campaign carried out by the state. The climate of chaos and tension which was created one way or another by elements of disorder. As everyone knows, the social tensions between the Bedwins and the Drews in Seda are not new. They are as old as the Syrian state itself. He went on to add that Syria’s government did not absolve itself of any violations and pledge accountability.

Syria’s interim government said sectarian clashes in the Druze province of Sweida were “halted” on Sunday as security forces redeployed to the southern region and tribal forces that had converged on Sweida withdrew. The government has struggled to implement a US-brokered ceasefire deal designed to avert further Israeli military intervention in support of the Druze minority.

  1. I hope everything can hold, and the foreign investments can begin.
So everyone can focus on development.
Most of this is born out of lack for resources and poverty.

  2. Short correction: Israel did not attack Damascus to protect the Drews but to weaken the new Syrian state infrastructure, and ensure as much chaos and instability as possible as it has done throughout the Middle East since its 1967. Europe bearing the consequences in terms of refugee inflows. Furthermore, to ensure its full control of the Syrian South, which it has already invaded in the beginning of the year. Somehow similar – if not equivalent – to Russias attack on Ukraine I guess

  3. Its not the Syrian Forces that made them pull out, Israel along with 2000 IDF druze went in there, along with helicopters bringing medical supplies. Only Israel can protect the Druze.
