Security alert underway near nursery months after viable pipe bombs discovered in area

A security alert is underway close to a nursery school in Co Down just months after two viable bombs were found in the same location.
Police are currently at the scene in Dromore.

Church Street has been closed off and cordons have been in place.

“Members of the public and road users are asked to avoid the area,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

"A further update will be provided in due course.”

The Old Station Nursery has contacted parents informing them that they were notified of a security alert at nearby premises at 10am.

I want to reassure you that the children are unaware of any activity within the area and we will update you with information as we receive it,” the email states.

“There may be a possibility that you will be required to collect your child earlier than usual today, but we will inform you when we receive an update from PSNI.

"Please do not attempt to come and collect your child before we contact you”.

The nursery confirmed its afterschool children will remain in the leisure centre and continue their day as normal and urged parents not to phone the nursery.

It also acknowledged the “very unsettling” nature of the communication and promised to keep parents updated.

PSNI Detective Inspector Keon said police were notified of a suspicious object in the area at around 9.30am.

“Ammunition Technical Officers attended along with crews and remain at the scene,” they added.

"Cordons remain in place at this time.

“However, I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or to anyone with CCTV or other footage that could assist with the investigation to contact detectives.

"At this time, we continue to work to establish a motive for this and are exploring a number of potential motivating factors.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 331 24/07/25.

Two suspicious objects were discovered outside the A1 Recovery on Church Street back in April causing disruption to the nursery school.

Police escorted young children out of the nursery building and brought them down to waiting parents at the roadside during the operation.

Army Technical Officers determined that the objects were viable pipe bomb type devices which were made safe and taken away for forensic examination.

Meanwhile police are in attendance at a security alert in north Belfast this morning.

  1. And the same muddying of the waters going on as the last time as concerns the business targeted. It’s the same car dealer/mechanic shop by the looks of it, one of a number of such businesses (car dealers/trucking companies) targeted across Antrim and Down in recent months.
