I am never slow to criticise Loyalists and call out behaviour that I perceive to be antagonistic, sectarian, bigoted etc.

This band however has demonstrated compassion and respect towards a community in mourning, still trying to process the horrible tragedy that unfolded in Maguiresbridge.

Cancelling their annual parade, probably the second biggest event of their calendar, is a gesture that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

  1. Absolutely. Their statement was well considered too. “There will be other days to parade. In these days of mourning, respect must come first.”

  2. Jesus, fair play to them. A ‘common sense’ move maybe, but they were under no obligation to do it all the same.

Hopefully the respect they’ve shown in a time of mourning will be remembered by the local community, and echo down through to other organisations and events in the future.

  3. No need to applaude them, I’m sure they are doing it for genuine reasons but its not about them.

  4. The right thing to do. Congratulations to ‘Defender of The Rock FB’. I hope you have a great parade when you get to do it.

  5. Well done to them, it’s a very small community. The first responders don’t check anyone’s religious affiliations.

  6. Quick, Shinnerbots, flood the sub with something bad about demuns! Cant be having a decent post about demuns in here!

  7. What was that Chris Rock joke, “That’s what you’re supposed to do! What do you want – a cookie?”

  8. I’d somehow missed the Maguiresbridge shooting on the news. What an awful thing for the victims and wider community to experience.

Fair play to them for calling off the parade, this sort of respect for each other would go a long way in other areas of NI.
