The Soviet ability to absorb those casualties and still continue fighting is insane. 700,000 casualties in two encirclements in any other military would’ve shaken their society to it’s core, but the Red Army soldiered on.
If the Japanese were smart, they should’ve knocked out the Soviet Union during this phase instead of attacking the United States

Nazis lunched the war against Poland on Sept 1st 1939.
One week after ceiling a unatural alliance with soviet Russia who just cancelled the original aliied plan.
The plan nobody cares about because it failed. But here it was.
Alies remember that what stopped WWI was starvation and hunger riot in Berlin in 1918. They made sure to have Germany even more vulnerable to this after WW1. So the plan is basically a blocus + all out defense war till starvation hits again.
Stalin makes two treaties that cancelled that plan. One mutual non aggression pact and one commercial pact by wich USSR would supply the nazis with everything they needed and didn’t have.
Nazis then are going for 18 months of victory.
The only rock in their shoes was the faillure of the battle of England in which the nazis hope to get UK out of the war with massive bombing of their cities.
At the dawn of june 22th 1941, all continental Eurppe is either conquered or ally with the nazis. Nazis invaded USSR that day and went for another six months of victory.
But not fast enough. They really thought the soviets would crumble after the disaster of winter war with Finland (draw, so to say, with a 5 millions people country, which shhowed how ineffective soviet army was, and after the great purges that sent the better part of the veterans of the red army to the firing squad or to concentration camps).
Nazis got surprised by general Winter. And the battle in front of Moscow was their first defeat in the war against ussr.
