Belgian MoD kneels in front of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s tomb, paying respect

    Theo Francken, the Belgian Minister of Defence, visited Anıtkabir, the largest Hittite revival structure in the world, where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s tomb is located. He paid respect to him by kneeling down, although the official protocol doesn’t entail such a custom – and the previous foreign dignitaries didn’t do so.

    He wrote the following to the Private Journal of Anıtkabir:

    “On behalf of the Kingdom of Belgium and its armed forces, in this historical place, I am proud to offer my respect to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. He was a great statesman who provided the Turks safe borders, a modern, secular constitution, and the rule of law. Thanks to this extraordinary success, Turkey has become a strong and prosperous nation, maintaining the role of ensuring regional stability to this day.”

    He also remarked that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk “goes on with inspiring generations all over the world.”

    He pushed through incredibly difficult reforms during incredibly difficult times thanks to which one of our most strategically important neighbours, both politically and geographically, is still standing despite everything you-know-who has done over the past 20+ years. Name a better buffer!?

    Those who disagree might want to imagine a Turkey that’s just as unstable as many countries in the Middle East.

  12. The turkish deification of a person, who committed war crimes, will never stop being ridiculous to me. There are more statues of him than civil rights in Turkey. No progressive country does that thing. If you scout the western countries you wont find 1 state that does this at this extend. Its creepy and downright moronic when people deify such past people, because in this case it opens the door for authoritarianism under the guise of “our hero would have wanted this” and “do it in his memory” + “kemal would have wanted that you guys invade the middle east and slaughter randos” from the state.. which is pretty much whats going on in that hellhole.

    After all, he is, only human.

    Nice to see europeans bend the knee for money disregarding their unions and continents. Shows how spineless all these politicians are, which isnt new info.

  29. I visited Anitkabir as well to pay respect to the true democrat that seperated state from the relligion. This is the only way.

    I suggest every one endorsing hin, because he was secular, to research about him. Secularism was roughly the only positive thing about him.
