A Texas judicial panel has paused wrongful death lawsuits related to the Port Arthur LNG scaffolding collapse.

BEAUMONT, Texas — New court filings this week have revealed photos of the deadly scaffolding collapse at the Port Arthur LNG site, as a Texas judicial panel has granted a temporary pause on all related wrongful death lawsuits.

The Texas Multi-District Litigation Panel is weighing a request from the defendants—including ConocoPhillips and Sempra—to consolidate the cases into a single courtroom. In the meantime, the lawsuits are on hold, including a Jefferson County case filed on behalf of Reggie Magee, one of the victims.

“It should be here, should be in Jefferson County,” said attorney Jamie Matuska of the Bernsen Law Firm, who represents Magee’s family.

So far, two wrongful death lawsuits have been filed—one in Jefferson County for Magee and another in Harris County on behalf of victims Felix Lopez and Felipe Mendez.

Matuska told 12News that ongoing proceedings are still happening in Jefferson County District Judge Templeton’s court, including a dispute over Bechtel Corporation’s alleged violation of a judge’s restraining order.

“The consequences of that violation could be significant,” Matuska said.

Attorneys for the industrial corporations argue consolidating the cases will improve efficiency. But plaintiffs contend the cases belong in Jefferson County, where the collapse occurred and where a judge has already handled key evidence.

“What they’re trying to do is ultimately get this case moved out of—potentially out of—Jefferson County and out of the court that it’s currently pending in,” Matuska said.

He emphasized this isn’t a multi-state case, but a single incident rooted in Southeast Texas.

The litigation panel has not yet announced when it will decide where the case will ultimately be heard.
