I saw a scientific video about the trenches in the red forest. If i remember correctly, the video stated, that the radiation level in this area is serious, but not that serious. So the russians who shoveled the trenches have a good chance to not have any long term health issues.

Thousands of people lived, worked, even collected shrooms in that area over the years. And no one died.
