Bratislava and Washington are
finalizing a bilateral nuclear energy cooperation agreement that
could pave the way for the construction of a new reactor in
Slovakia worth an estimated 9 billion euros. This was reported
by Slovak public broadcaster Stv1, reporting that the signing of
the agreement is expected soon at the White House, in the
presence of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. Before coming
into force, however, the agreement will have to obtain approval
from the EU responsible for atomic energy issues through
Euratom, the European Atomic Energy Community. Slovakia’s
Economy Ministry clarified that the agreement does not
constitute a binding contract for the construction of the
reactor, nor does it imply the selection of a specific company.
However, it is not ruled out that the construction of the plant
may be entrusted to an American company.
