He knew them "like anybody else," since they lived in Palm Beach just like he did. Like we say in my country, he's a "bold-faced liar!" Therefore, he will lie through his teeth to save himself and will say whatever seems the right thing for him to say at the time. Lying appears to be second nature to him.
